About Dr. Carson & Dr. Sheng

Dr. James Carson opened his family and sports medicine practice on Main Street Unionville in 1983. He completed his medical degree at the University of Toronto, postgraduate training in Vancouver, and has held leadership roles including Chief of Family Practice at Scarborough Grace Hospital. He is affiliated with Oak Valley Health (Markham Stouffville Hospital) and the Scarborough Health Network, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine with a cross‑appointment in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Carson holds a Diploma in Sport Medicine and has served as team physician for Canada’s National Women’s Rugby Team and National Swim Team. He has a focused practice in Sport and Exercise Medicine, with special interests in concussion management and dance medicine.

Dr. Alicia Sheng joined us as a long-term locum family physician in July 2024. She has completed her undergraduate studies at Western University, medical school at the University of Ottawa, and family medicine residency at Markham Stouffville Hospital and the University of Toronto. Like Dr. Carson, she has a strong interest in sport and exercise medicine and provides full‑scope family care, including well‑baby checks, PAP tests, and ongoing preventative care.

With Dr. Sheng now well established within our practice, we have been able to increase appointment availability each week, helping to ensure that more patients receive timely care. Please note that Dr. Carson is not retiring and will continue to be your family physician for the foreseeable future. The addition of Dr. Sheng has also allowed Dr. Carson to take some well-deserved time to recharge, helping him remain sharp and energized in his work. During Dr. Carson’s vacation weeks, Dr. Sheng will continue to provide continuity of care.

As some of you may or may not know, she is also preparing for maternity leave beginning August 2026. While she is away, another wonderful locum family physician will be covering the practice to ensure continued access to comprehensive medical care. We appreciate your understanding and ongoing support as we continue working to best serve all of our patients.

A Teaching Office

The University of Toronto has recognized Dr. Carson and Dr. Sheng's practice for training of Family Physicians. On occasion, you may be introduced to these medical trainees who work under the supervision of Dr. Carson.

How We Help

At Sport Med North, we combine family medicine and sport and exercise medicine to help you stay healthy, active, and informed. We focus on prevention, early detection, and practical strategies you can use every day.

Proactive Preventative Care Program
*PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAM*

Our Proactive Preventative Care Program has received several Quality and Innovation Awards from the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. Your care happens in two steps:

PC1 – Phone Screening Call

You first schedule a phone call with our team to review your health history, risks, and screening needs.

PC2 – Office Visit with Dr. Carson or Dr. Sheng

After any tests are completed, you come into the office for a shorter follow‑up visit. Together, we review your results, screening tests, immunizations, and healthy lifestyle choices so we can optimize your long‑term health.

Heart Health & Education

We also provide education on heart health and cholesterol management. Our Heart Disease Video (January 2023) explains non‑drug strategies to reduce high cholesterol and lower your risk of heart attack and stroke.
